~*~Market History~*~ |
Way back, almost too far to remember, there was a craft Market in the New Caledonian Curling Club. We were vendors in that Market and loved it. At the end of the first season we were very excited about returning the following year. Come springtime, the ice went out of the harbor and the market was gone as well. That summer we had to go to flea markets in order to sell our crafts. My partner and I met at the drug store one day in late fall and got talking about what we had to do in order to sell our crafts. It was at that time that the Pictou County Weekend Market became an idea and eventually what it is today. The first year the Market was run as a co-op. Every vendor who stayed for 9 out of 13 weeks received a part of the profit. At least 2 of our original vendors are still with us after all these years. Well done…. It didn´t take us long to realize that we couldn´t work that hard for no gain. The first thing we did on the opening day was to remove the admission fee. We don´t like to pay to shop so we don´t expect our customers to do so either. The building has been renovated over the years and makes our job so much easier. The first year there was nothing but studs and the steel on the outside. We papered the whole rink with end rolls of paper from our local printer. Every time the wind blew we had to run with a stapler to fix the wall. Sometimes in Pictou that could keep you pretty busy! Now we have nicely painted white plywood walls and it is much more manageable. We were there for the Launch of the "Ship Hector." The Town was over run with people. It was a most exciting time. People came from all over the world. A great number came from Scotland who had ancestors leave for Canada on the original "Ship Hector". The launch was delayed one day due to bad weather but was worth the wait. It was awesome. She is now tied up at her own pier across the street from the Market for everyone to enjoy. This season the following vendors have joined us for the season. The Pork Shop, The Rock Maple Toy Company, Lynn Moore - Fabric Art. , Phillip Roy, Author, Julie Fulton, Fresh homemade bread, dog and horse cookies. Connell’s Wood Crafts, Peter Young, photographer, Joey Hyisky, steel garden flowers and Fresh Fish. Our old favorites are back for this season including Jewelry, fudge, recycled denim, jams and jellies and pickles, The Tuckered Duck, stained glass, Lyn sue Wice, artist, Johnsons Antiques and of course “ Dan the Coin Man.” Each year we close we wonder if we should open the following season. But it is in our blood. We are as excited today, as we were 14 years ago.Joyce and Keith |
